Remember to put your rubbish and recycling out by 7am. If you miss your collection, keep your waste on your property until your next collection, or take it to the Port Solent recycling centre.

Getting rid of Christmas trees

Real trees should be cut up and put in your garden waste bin, or taken to the Port Solent recycling centre for composting. Trees under six feet tall can be put out with your rubbish for two weeks after Christmas.

You can also take your tree to the Waterfront Garden Centre to be chipped. You can drop your tree off on the following dates:

  • Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 January
  • Thursday 10 to Sunday 13 January
  • Thursday 17 to Sunday 20 January

Chippings will be used in parks and green spaces across the city.

How to have a less wasteful Christmas

Over the festive period we collect about 10% more waste than at other times of the year. A lot of it could be recycled.

Put the following items out with your recycling:

  • Christmas cards - tear off any sections with ribbons, glitter or bows
  • cardboard boxes from packaging, including postal, toy, gift, food and drink boxes
  • food and drink cans
  • plastic bottles
  • empty aerosols

Put in your bin:

  • gift wrap - a lot of it contains plastic and can't be recycled

Take to a recycling bank:

  • glass bottles
  • textiles

Glass

To reduce overflows, we'll be laying on more collections at bottle banks over the holidays. If the bottle bank you visit is full, try to find another one nearby or take your bottles home with you - don't leave the banks overflowing.

Green Waste Club
