Severe weather damage to city roads
Unlike most authorities, Portsmouth City Council has a 25 year agreement to maintain the city highway network, funded through the private finance initiative. This investment in Portsmouth's strategic roads meant these roads held up well against the severe winter weather we experienced in the last few years.
Minor roads, however, did not fare so well, so any additional funding was used to repair damaged road surfaces. This meant the winter weather has not had a long term impact on the state and appearance of our roads.
Visit Streets ahead for more information on Portsmouth's private finance initiative.
The highways design team works with other council departments and our main contractor, Colas, to project manage environmental improvement schemes, such as bus lanes, cycle lanes and traffic calming schemes.
