A free day of festivities to celebrate young women in Portsmouth takes place on Saturday 10 March at The Charles Dickens Centre in Lake Road.

The event, which will be hosted by young women aged between 11 and 19 who attend Portsmouth City Council's youth clubs, brings together a variety of activities  under one roof.

The day is set to inspire, entertain and showcase the talents of individuals taking part and ties in with International Women's Day.

The day will focus on encouraging young women, aged 11 plus, to have a go at a range of activities, to showcase their talents, try something new and to enjoy a day meeting inspirational women.

Activities will include a digital arts project by Aspex Gallery and a flash mob dance session led by Pompey in the Community. There will also be speed meetings, where visitors can chat with women working in various careers including journalism, science, the arts and business.

Different activities will take place across the building, including performances, group activities, a chill-out area, displays and workshops. Performers from Rant Studio will sing individual pieces and perform as a group.

Cllr Jennie Brent, Portsmouth City Council's Cabinet Member for Property and Housing, said: "It's incredible to be involved in this worldwide celebration of women's achievements. The young women have worked extremely hard to pull this event together and have learnt a whole range of skills in the process.

"I hope that all the visitors are inspired by the workshops, speed meetings and entertainment and take something positive away from this day of celebration."

To join in the celebrations and activities simply come down to the centre between 12pm and 4pm on Saturday and have a go. Refreshments will be available for visitors.
