Reading is not only a relaxing and enjoyable pass time, but it can also help you live a longer and healthier life.

Reading a book for 30 minutes a day can contribute to a longer lifespan, help to reduce stress, reduce your risk of dementia and improve your wellbeing.

Reading works better than other forms of relaxation such as going for a walk, or listening to music to soothe your nerves and help you keep calm.

Cllr Linda Symes Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport said: "Reading a book is the ultimate relaxation and with research showing that reading for just half an hour a day can actually help reduce stress and increase life expectancy there's just no better antidote to modern life."

It doesn’t matter what you read the benefits are the same and your local library has a range of materials to suit all tastes. 

Visit your local library for all the latest releases and some old favourites, and enjoy a good read and a longer life.
