Information about changes to council services as a result of coronavirus

The start of the festive season in Portsmouth's main shopping areas will be officially marked this month as stars from the Kings Theatre production of Aladdin and Wave 105 radio host the Christmas light switch-on events across the city.

The traditional switch-on events will run from 4pm - 6pm and include performances from local school bands, choirs and dancing groups before finishing with the switch on and firework finale.

The Christmas light switch on events will take place from 4pm - 6pm on the following dates:

  • Palmerston Road, Southsea on Thursday 14 November
  • Commercial Road, City Centre on Thursday 21 November
  • Cosham High Street, Cosham on Wednesday 27 November

All the events will be attended by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor David Fuller. Portsmouth Football Club players will also be at the Southsea and City Centre events and the Love Southsea market will be running all day before the Southsea event.

Councillor Steve Pitt, Portsmouth City Council's Cabinet Member for Culture and City Development, said: "Come and join in the festive fun at the annual Christmas light switch-on events in Cosham, Southsea and the City Centre and start your Christmas shopping by supporting Portsmouth shops."

Portsmouth Christmas market is also returning to the city centre for the festive season, open daily from 9am - 7pm from 16 November. Beautiful wooden cabins sell a mixture of hot food, mulled wine and gifts. There will also be a giant walk-in LED Bauble - ideal for festive photos.

The new-look ice rink in Guildhall Square, which includes a canopy for guaranteed skating whatever the weather, will be open from Saturday 23 November 2019 until Sunday 5 January 2020. Tickets can be booked via the Portsmouth Ice Skating website
