Coronavirus: council service information and advice

Information about changes to council services as a result of coronavirus

Preparations to mark carers week - which takes place from 8 to 14 June - are well underway.

The activities planned by the Portsmouth Carers Centre will be a little different this year, with digital events lined up to allow people across the city to mark the week safely.

First up is the opportunity to take part in a digital chat over a cuppa with other carers at 2pm on Thursday 11 June. There is also the chance for carers to join an online event at 2pm on Friday 12 June to share their experiences of caring during the current crisis - to make sure their experiences are captured and used to influence the types of support on offer in a post-COVID world.

Cllr Matthew Winnington, Portsmouth City Council's Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Social Care said: "The theme of carers week in 2020 is Making Caring Visible. The coronavirus pandemic has shone a light on the people who give their all to support the most vulnerable people in our society - and I think it's important to make sure that unpaid carers are recognised as part of that.

"As well as celebrating their enormous contribution, it's our responsibility to make sure carers are seen, heard, and understood. We hope the events we have planned for this week offer an opportunity for carers to do just that."

Many people are taking on more caring responsibilities for their relatives and friends who are disabled, ill or older and who need support. Carers provide a lifeline for people who need support, old and young, helping them with everyday tasks and managing their daily lives.

It's especially important during the coronavirus crisis that carers look after themselves too as they take care of some the most vulnerable in society.
