Portsmouth City Council is supporting a UK wide campaign by hosting events to spread awareness of the Shared Lives care model.

Shared Lives is a unique service that gives people the option to share someone’s home while receiving support to live to their full potential. It is available to people with learning disabilities, those in mental ill health and older people, as well as those with substance misuse problems or those undergoing rehabilitation.

Shared Lives week 2017 runs from 17- 25 June, and across the UK Shared Lives schemes, Shared Lives carers and people who use Shared Lives services are getting the word out about this unique form of care and support.

Shared Lives carers share their home and family life with an adult who needs help or support to live well. Around 40 people locally already choose to have support in this way - individuals and carers are carefully matched and as we need a diversity of households the Portsmouth Shared Lives are looking to recruit more Shared Lives carers.

Carers come from all walks of life - you can stay in work if you choose to and there are no restrictions based on your relationship status. You need to have a spare room in a home of your own - either rented or owned. To become a carer you'll undergo a thorough application and training process, and it can take some time for an individual to be matched with your household. Carers receive an income of between £300 and £400 a week.

  • Monday 19 June - Information stall in the reception of the Civic Offices, Guildhall Walk between 10am - 2:30pm
  • Tuesday 20 June - Information stall at Carnegie Library, Fratton Road between 10am - 12:30pm and then again 1:30 - 3:30pm
  • Wednesday 21 June - Information stall at Southsea Library, Palmerston Road 10am - 2:30pm
