We're launching the Portsmouth Young Sports Person of the Year award to celebrate young people's sporting successes.

The award is open to Portsmouth residents aged 18 and under who are currently competing in sport at a high level. Anyone can nominate a young person for the award; parent, coach, club, school or college.  Nominees must be training or members of a club within the city for a sport which is recognised by Sport England.

The scheme is established by Portsmouth City Council and Portsmouth Sports Council as part of our commitment to support local young people with the talent and prowess to compete in sport at the highest level regionally and nationally.

Cllr Linda Symes, Cabinet Member for Culture Leisure and Sport at Portsmouth City Council said:
"We're thrilled to be launching this award to identify and celebrate the successes and sporting achievements of young people from across our city. Young people should be rewarded for their dedication and commitment to their support so I'd encourage people to send in their nominations.

"We're committed to providing young people with the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports and the city boasts many excellent clubs and facilities across the city to enable this so I'm looking forward to receiving lots of entries for the award."

The judging will take place in February and the prize - a trophy and £500 from City of Portsmouth Sports Council to assist  in the cost of competing will be awarded at the Mayor making ceremony in May.
