We have exceeded our target set by the government for the number of apprentices working at the council this year.
As of the 31 March 2019, more than 3% of our workforce are now apprentices. We had 115 working in the council across all directorates and 25 working in schools in roles such as teaching assistants. We have to meet a government set apprenticeship target of 2.3% of the workforce; this applies to all public sector employers.
The target by the government followed the introduction of the apprenticeship levy in 2017 to increase the number of quality apprenticeships in the public sector. This is part of a government initiative to recruit three million apprentices by 2020. The levy applies to all employers with a pay bill of over £3 million per year.
