Coronavirus: council service information and advice

Information about changes to council services as a result of coronavirus

Adopt South, the south’s first Regional Adoption Agency, opened its doors across the whole of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight on Monday (1 April 2019).

The new multi-agency partnership will bring together professional expertise from four authority areas (Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton) and three independent agencies: Adoption UK, Barnardo’s, Parents and Children Together.

Increased numbers of adopters, improved matching processes for children and support for adoptive families will be at the heart of the work of Adopt South. As a single agency, the partners will work more effectively to improve life outcomes for children.

Each of the partners shares a commitment to finding families for children who, for a variety of often complex reasons, are unable to live and grow up with the parents and families into which they were born. Having a larger pool of adopters to choose from will make the adoption process quicker, however, the overriding priority is for children to be adopted successfully with the right adopters for them. This may mean that, in some cases, the process may need to take a little longer than others. Additionally, many new adopters may find they can become parents more quickly.

As a regional adoption agency, Adopt South will:

• Recruit, assess and approve adopters across the partnership’s region
• Match children in need of adoptive families
• Support families following an adoption’s completion

Responsibility for looking after children for whom an adopter is yet to be found remains with the local authority for the area in which the children are living.
