Portsmouth BookFest is a book festival held each February/March with something to appeal to everyone. Organised by a partnership between Portsmouth City Council and The Hayling Island Bookshop, previous festivals have been a great success with residents from Portsmouth and further afield taking the opportunity to meet some of the most exciting authors in the UK.

As well as presenting famous authors BookFest is also proud to support local talent and has previously worked in partnership with local organisations and groups, including Portsmouth University and Portsmouth Writers' Hub.

At most events there is an opportunity to buy books and have them signed by the author.

Friday 20th October 2017-28th February 2018

Journey to where magic and myth began with Harry Potter: A History of Magic at Portsmouth Libraries.

Have you ever wanted to delve into Divination, ponder the peculiarities of Potions and discover magical creatures? Now you can. In partnership with the British Library, Portsmouth Libraries will be capturing the traditions of folklore and magic at the heart of the Harry Potter stories to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

At Portsmouth Central Library we are lucky to be hosting an exhibition from October 20th of twelve panels of information and images from the British Library’s exhibition in London, which showcases collections and archived materials connected to the Hogwarts subjects, featuring content from the British Library, Bloomsbury publishers and J.K. Rowling's own archive. We will also be bringing together some of Portsmouth's own archives to display with our panels, including archives on witchcraft in Portsmouth and magic and mystery from the Arthur Conan Doyle collection.

To complement the exhibition we will be hosting a wide ranging programme of events for all ages - turn the page to discover more!

For tickets ask in the Portsmouth Library hosting the event or telephone the library.

The Harry Potter: A History of Magic regional displays have been created in association with the British Library throughout the Living Knowledge Network, an innovative partnership with 21 major libraries across the UK.

The British Library’s major exhibition in partnership with Bloomsbury, Harry Potter: A History of Magic, is open in London from 20 October 2017 – 28 February 2018. Book your ticket for this extraordinary new addition to J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World at www.bl.uk. Join in the conversation on social media using the hashtag #BLHarryPotter.
