Coronavirus: council service information and advice
Information about changes to council services as a result of coronavirus
All Portsmouth pupils in Year R - Year 6 should have received a Silly Squad summer reading challenge pack from their school.
The packs encourage children to join the Silly Squad - a team of adventurous animals - and join in a summer reading challenge. There is plenty of fun, happiness and laughter hidden in the pages of books waiting for children to discover them. The pack contains a fold-out poster and stickers so that they can record their reading activity over the holidays.
How do I get involved?
Children can either use the fold-out poster and sticker pack to take part, or register securely online on the Summer Reading Challenge website. Children can read the recommended six books over the summer, or set their own reading targets. Children, who complete the summer reading challenge will be presented with their certificate and medal when they return to school in the autumn term.
As well as reading, there are lots of other fun activities. These include games and quizzes, video content, and digital and downloadable activities to take part in the Challenge at home. There are free gifts up for grabs, and families can share what they're doing on social media.
There are two parts to signing up for children and their parent/carer, and you can find further details on the Home Zone on the Summer Reading Challenge website.
Where can I borrow books?
Children can still borrow books and collect other goodies from one the three open library branches.
- Central library
- Southsea library
- North End library
The mobile library is also open in Portsmouth. Check the route and schedule, so you can plan your visit.
Visit the designated library webpage for the changes in place around COVID-19, the mobile library schedule and planning your trip to the library.
Families can also download eBooks and eAudiobooks for free along with lots of other exciting services on the library website.
A 'silly books' collection is available to help your find your perfect summer read. You can find these silly books and many other funny and crazy titles at Central, Southsea and North End Libraries.
You can also email the library team to get a librarian's recommendations on 'silly' books, what books are available and more.
The Summer Reading Challenge website also boasts a helpful section to find the perfect 'silly' read.
The Portsmouth library Facebook page (@portsmouthlibraries) will also regularly post children's activities over the summer holidays.
Children and families are invited to share their 'silly' experiences and stories on the Official Portsmouth Libraries Facebook page using hashtags #sillysquad2020 and #SRCPortsmouth.
Show Portsmouth that you are a member of the Silly Squad. Print, colour in and stick these posters to your window for some silly fun.
