Portsmouth City Council would like to encourage as many businesses as possible to be aware of their social and environmental impact. Follow the links below for more information about Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR):
- UK Government Gateway to CSR - government view and effort on promoting responsible business
- Business in the Community - private sector membership network encouraging and supporting companies on responsible business through four areas: community, environment, marketplace and workplace.

Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Partnership
The council helped establish the Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Partnership - an alliance of public, private, and social organisations, committed to improving the economic, social and environmental well-being of the area. For over ten years it has been involved in the successful funding and delivery of local regeneration projects to improve the aspirations, the skills and employability of local people.
Portsmouth - Fairtrade city
The Fairtrade Foundation works with international partners to improve trading conditions for third world producers who may be disadvantaged by the way commodity markets operate.
It encourages retailers to buy commodities direct from the producer, at a fair price, which allows the producers to pay their employees a fair wage, thus providing a better standard of living for the producers and their employees. Trade companies work in partnership with the producers and help them to negotiate better conditions.
Portsmouth achieved recognition as a Fairtrade City in 2004, which meant demonstrating that sufficient shops, cafes, restaurants and local groups used Fairtrade products, that we supported the idea and that we had an effective publicity strategy. The Portsmouth Fairtrade Forum maintains the city's Fairtrade status, by organising a range of events to promote Fairtrade locally. They work with local businesses, schools and education groups.
