Portsmouth commemorated the 82nd anniversary of D-Day with an annual service at the D-Day memorial stone on Saturday 6 June.
The event was organised by Portsmouth City Council in partnership with the Royal British Legion and led by Cannon White.
The service included a wreath-laying and a two-minute silence to mark the significant anniversary.
Councillor Steve Pitt, leader of Portsmouth City Council, said:
“Each year it’s extremely important that we commemorate the anniversary of D-Day to remind us of the bravery and sacrifice made by the military personnel who took part in the Normandy campaign, which was pivotal in bringing on the end of the Second World War.”
Attendees included veterans, military personnel, the Council Leader and Deputy Lord Mayor.
Separately, nine Portsmouth schoolchildren and their teachers travelled to Portsmouth’s twin city Caen in France to take part for the first time in one of its D-Day ceremonies. Brittany Ferries sponsored their return travel. Portsmouth Lord Mayor Cllr Abdul Kadir, Lady Mayoress and Cllr Attwell, Chairman of the Twinning Advisory Group, also attended the ceremonies in Caen.
D-Day marks the beginning of the allied invasion of Normandy, France, during the Second World War.
