Catching the bus to Hilsea Lines is a simple, affordable and convenient way to allow residents to access the wide range of activities available for all ages.
The initiative is part of Portsmouth’s wider Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), a £53m programme delivering faster, more reliable and more affordable bus services across the city.
By encouraging more people to use the bus for leisure journeys, the Council is highlighting its ambitions to reduce congestion and carbon emissions. It also improves access to green space and outdoor activities, supporting healthier lifestyles and ensures residents without access to a car can enjoy the city’s facilities.
Hilsea Lines has been transformed through major investment in recent years, including improvements to Hilsea Lido, walking and cycling routes, and parks and open spaces. Portsmouth has also improved travel to the area with upgrades along the A3 Northern Parade and new bus stops in Hilsea, making bus journeys smoother, safer and more reliable for visitors heading to Hilsea Lines.
Cllr Peter Candlish, Cabinet Member for Transport said: “By choosing the bus, people can avoid the cost and hassle of driving and parking, reduce their environmental impact and make the most of a great day out. Hilsea Lines is one of Portsmouth’s most important green spaces and we’ve invested significantly to improve it for residents and visitors alike. Eight bus services frequently stop right by the area, so it’s the easiest and most convenient way to visit.”
At the same time, work is progressing on the North Portsea Coastal Scheme at Ports Creek, the final phase of a major programme to strengthen flood defences along the city’s northern coastline. The scheme will deliver around 1.3km of new sea defences, including a raised earth embankment and rock armour designed to reduce erosion and protect against tidal flooding. The project will help safeguard thousands of homes, businesses and key infrastructure, while also improving access to the waterfront through enhanced paths and landscaping that maintain the area’s natural character.
