Now is the time to claim your free tickets to Portsmouth's annual Mayor Making Ceremony, taking place on Tuesday 19 May at Portsmouth Guildhall.

This long‑standing civic occasion marks the formal handover of responsibilities, as the serving Lord Mayor steps down and a successor is chosen. The election of the new Lord Mayor of Portsmouth will take place at the annual council meeting, which begins at 10am. Guests are respectfully requested to be seated by 9.30am.

During the meeting, councillors will put forward nominations before casting their votes to determine who will serve as Lord Mayor for the forthcoming year. Once elected, the new Lord Mayor will officially assume office and announce the charitable causes they will support during their term.

The ceremony includes the traditional presentation of the Keys to the City and the Portsmouth Sword, both of which represent the city’s heritage and its enduring connection with the Royal Navy.

The Mayor Making Ceremony also provides an opportunity to celebrate outstanding contributions to the community. Civic awards will be presented by the Lord Mayor to individuals and organisations whose efforts have made a meaningful difference to Portsmouth and its residents.
