An exciting unicorn sculpture is set to join the Pride of Portsmouth Lion art trail this year as part of Portsmouth100 celebrations.

The unicorn is inspired by the sea unicorn, which is featured in the historic Portsmouth city crest along with the sea-lion, and will be dedicated to the creativity and experiences of children taking part in HAF Portsmouth.

Local artist, Emilie-Jane Rivers-Martin, has been commissioned to work with local children to bring to life a design for the unicorn that features a constellation of stars woven throughout. Each star represents the voices, stories and imagination of children who benefit from the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF Portsmouth) programme across the city. To bring these stories to life, HAF Portsmouth will launch a Portsmouth100 Unicorn design competition during the Easter HAF programme.

Children and young people will be invited to design a star that reflects what HAF means to them, whether that’s the activities they’ve enjoyed, their favourite foods, the friends and memories they have made, and the new things they have learned.

All children participating in HAF this Easter can submit a star design through their provider, making the competition fully inclusive.

Councillor Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council said: “This project shines a light on the creativity of children across the city, giving young people the chance to shape an exciting part of the Pride of Portsmouth art trail while celebrating everything they gain through HAF Portsmouth.

“It’s a brilliant way to mark Portsmouth100 and showcase the power of community creativity.”

The final unicorn sculpture will take its place alongside the lions on the Pride of Portsmouth Art Trail, becoming a key feature of the Portsmouth100 centenary celebrations.
