Portsmouth City Council is delighted to announce the completion of the Castle Road transformation project, marking a major community milestone in creating a safer, greener and more welcoming destination for residents, visitors and local businesses.

Castle Road became a walking and cycling priority route in 2020, and has become a thriving hub of independent shops, cafés and creative spaces.

The newly completed scheme enhances this historic street even further with:

  • A high quality, level paved surface and central pathway for safer, easier movement
  • New planters, trees and nature based sustainable drainage to increase greenery and resilience in rainwater management

The improved layout creates an attractive shared space for both cyclists and pedestrians along one of Southsea’s quieter and most characterful routes.

The improvement works were delivered by Colas Limited on behalf of Portsmouth City Council and forms a key part of the council’s District Local Town Centre Programme (funded by the UK Government), supporting vibrant, welcoming spaces that help local businesses flourish.

Cllr Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council and Cabinet Member for Culture, said:

“Spring is here and Castle Road is ready to welcome everyone to a safer and greener space to relax, shop, eat and enjoy. As we celebrate Portsmouth’s centenary year, we’re proud to see this historic street revitalised, and welcome residents and visitors to experience the character and creativity that make Castle Road special.”

Steve Brazier, Secretary of the Castle Road Community Association, said:

“This project has been a model of true collaboration between our community, local residents, traders, and Portsmouth City Council. As the Castle Road Community Association, we are incredibly grateful for the Council’s support in helping bring our shared vision for Castle Road to life, celebrating the area’s rich cultural heritage whilst welcoming the future.”
