Lord Mayor’s biography
Councillor Abdul Kadir has called Portsmouth home since 1984, when he first moved to the city and established a successful restaurant business. He has remained in Portsmouth ever since, building both his professional and personal life within the community. He is married and has three children and three grandchildren.
Over the years, Councillor Kadir has been closely involved with Portsmouth’s Bangladeshi community, which has grown and developed significantly during his time in the city. His commitment to community engagement and support has been a key aspect of why he chose to become a councillor and has played an important role in his life.
In his councillor role, he is passionate about representing and engaging with communities across the whole city, recognising the diversity, strength and potential that Portsmouth has to offer. He takes great pride in serving the city he has long called home.
Councillor Kadir is also deeply involved in the religious life of Portsmouth, contributing to the city’s rich cultural and spiritual landscape, and having served on the Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education (SACRE). Councillor Kadir is a Freemason.
During his time as a councillor, he has served on many and various committees, particularly enjoying both the Scrutiny and Licensing Committees.
Councillor Kadir will be the 100th Lord Mayor of Portsmouth and will be supported by his wife, Tahmina, as Lady Mayoress.
