Work is set to begin this autumn to improve how people move along A3 Northern Parade and London Road junction, making every day journeys easier and bus travel faster for everyone who lives, works or travels in Portsmouth.
Starting Monday 27 October 2025, Portsmouth City Council will begin improvement works at this key junction as part of a wider plan to make getting around the city easier, safer and more reliable for all.
The works will be carried out in two phases to help reduce disruption. The first phase will last around six weeks, with the second phase planned for early 2026. More details about phase two will be shared closer to the time.
These changes follow feedback from residents and local businesses, who told the council they wanted better public transport, and smoother journeys. The plans have also been shaped by traffic data and modelling.
The improvements are funded through Portsmouth’s £52 million Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), a government funded programme to improve bus services and make travel more convenient and sustainable across the city.
Key improvements include:
- Bus lanes will be upgraded to help buses run more smoothly and reliably.
- Roads, pavements and cycle paths will be resurfaced to improve safety and comfort.
- Drainage will be improved to help prevent flooding.
- New illuminated signs will make it easier to find your way.
- Green spaces will be added to make the area more attractive.
- Better bus flow means less congestion for everyone, including car drivers, helping traffic move more efficiently across the city.
During the works varying lane closures will be in place both northbound and southbound on A3 Northern Parade and London Road. The southbound right turn lane into Northern Parade will be closed for seven weeks. Diversions will be clearly signed. The Hilsea Crescent bus stop (Stop G) will be temporarily suspended; passengers should use nearby stops at Oakwood Road or Hilsea Lido.
A Portsmouth City Council spokesperson said:
“These works are a direct response to what residents told us they wanted – safer, greener, and more reliable travel options. By upgrading key infrastructure now, we’re laying the groundwork for a transport network that better serves everyone in Portsmouth.”
