Childminding from your home

You can work alone or with others (four or more people) to provide childcare from your home. You can choose to register with a childminder agency or Ofsted. Find out more about registering as a childminder.

Use this simple chart to help you decide what type of childminding service you want to offer, and which registration you need.

Childminding from non-domestic premises

In November 2024, the government introduced a new type of childminder status – childminder without domestic premises (CWDP).

You can:

  • care for children aged 0-8 years old (not including children you’re related to or have parental responsibility for)
  • provide childcare for payment or reward
  • work for more than 2 hours a day
  • work only on approved non-domestic premises
  • work as part of a team of 4 to provide or assist with childcare

You still need to register with Ofsted or a childminding agency – but as a CWDP rather than a regular childminder.

Childminder agencies

Childminder agencies (CMAs) register childminders and providers of childcare on domestic premises. They help with training, business support, advice and finding parents who need childcare. They may also cover some of the upfront registration costs.
