There is no formal way to appeal an FPN. If the fine isn’t paid, the council may take you to court. The court can give a higher fine and may also give you a criminal record.

Examples of court penalties include:

  • Littering: Up to £2,500
  • Fly-tipping: Up to £50,000 or prison
  • Not showing waste transfer notes: Up to £5,000

If you don’t agree with the fine, the case will go to court. The court will decide if the offence happened and what penalty should apply.
