Find out about Council Tax, how much it is, and how the money is spent.

Council Tax is a property based tax charged by local authorities to help fund essential services such as social care, waste collection, libraries, street maintenance, policing and fire services.

Every household in Portsmouth must pay Council Tax, although the amount you pay may be reduced if you qualify for a discount, disregard, exemption, or Council Tax Support (CTS).

You’ll receive a Council Tax bill once a year. Your bill is normally spread over 10 monthly instalments, but if you prefer you can ask to pay over 12 months instead.

We’ll also send you an updated bill whenever you let us know about a change in your circumstances, such as moving home or applying for a discount or exemption. Council Tax is one bill per household.
