If you drive an electric vehicle (EV) in Portsmouth, there are two main ways to charge it:

Charge at home

If you have off street parking, you can get a electric vehicle charging point installed so you can safely charge at home.

Whilst Portsmouth City Council supports and encourages electric vehicle uptake in the city, it is important that you, and any visitors to your property, charge vehicles safely and in a way that does not pose a health and safety risk to anyone using the footway.

Under the 1980 Highways Act, it is an offence to obstruct the footway. The council does not advise that electric vehicle owners run cables across the footway; we do strongly recommend that anyone doing so should consult with their home and vehicle insurance provider to fully understand the legal responsibilities and public liabilities. Portsmouth City Council is not and cannot be held responsible for any accidents caused by you as a homeowner or vehicle owner, or as caused by your agents or guests when visiting your premise, upon whatever basis.

Use a public chargepoint
