Holocaust Memorial Day on Monday 27 January will be recognised in Portsmouth with a public flag-raising ceremony.

The event is open for people to attend and is being held outside the Civic Centre, Guildhall Square from 9.15am.

The ceremony will be led by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Cllr Jason Fazackarley, who said:

“The national Holocaust Memorial Day will remember the millions of Jewish people who were murdered by the Nazis during the Second World War, and those killed in subsequent genocides.

“This year also marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp, as well as the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

“We hope the day can be an opportunity for people to come together, learn from the past, and take actions to make a better future for all.”

In the evening city buildings the Guildhall, Spinnaker Tower and the City Museum will be lit up purple to further mark the day.
