Charles Dickens’ famous festive tale of ghosts and redemption is to come alive at his Portsmouth birthplace, on Old Commercial Road, where visitors can discover ‘A Christmas Carol’ story.

Dressed to follow the tale of Scrooge, Charles Dickens’ Birthplace will come alive with sounds, expertly performed by actor Vincent Franklin, best known for his performances in Happy Valley, The Bodyguard and Cucumber.

Vincent, who is performing a one man show of A Christmas Carol at Thornden Hall in Chandler’s Ford, has recorded lines from the book to give visitors an amazing experience as they walk around the house.

General admission to Charles Dickens’ Birthplace Museum is free for Portsmouth residents, who will need to show a proof of address.

There will also be ‘A Christmas Carol’ themed trail (£2 or £1 for leisure card holders) and those that take part will get a sweet prize.

The museum will be open 30 November, 5, 14, 15, 19, 21, 22, 29 December 10am until 4.30pm. Booking is essential, call 02392 834 779.

Cllr Steve Pitt, leader of the council with responsibility for Culture, said; “Portsmouth is rich in culture and we’re proud that Portsmouth residents can visit Charles Dickens’ Birthplace for free.

“This is a brilliant opportunity for residents to visit the museum and get into the spirit of Christmas, and take part in the Christmas Carol Trail for £2, or £1 for leisure card holders.”
