Work has been completed to remove algae and improve the water quality at Canoe Lake.

It is common to see signs of green algae in and around Canoe Lake, particularly in the summer months because of prolonged warmer weather, which helps algae to thrive.

A company contracted by Portsmouth City Council finished removing the green algae weed in Canoe Lake earlier this week. This is the second visit this year to ensure the lake is maintained to a good standard, having visited in June 2024. Additionally, the Council’s maintenance team regularly visits the site to carry out necessary works to clean the water as much as possible, and to tidy up any rubbish and algae in the area.

Councillor Steve Pitt, Leader of Portsmouth City Council said: “Year on year, we work very hard as a council to maintain all our parks and open spaces, including Canoe Lake. Whilst we cannot always predict and control the build-up of algae and bacteria, we are aware that the warmer weather can encourage this. The team has been working hard to clear the algae, carry out tests, and change the water to bring the lake to the best condition possible.”

The process of cleaning uses a craft that is mounted on caterpillar tracks fitted with paddles, to drive straight into the water and float around cutting and scooping up the algae.
