Temporary transport relocations will be in place from Monday 22 July 2024 for five months at the Hard Interchange.

Passengers will be able to continue to make journeys from the Hard while essential works are carried out on the area used by the buses and coaches in front of the terminal.

Portsmouth City Council is working in partnership with Mildren Construction Ltd, to minimise disruption to passengers while the works are underway. Bus/coach stops and the taxi rank will be relocated from Monday 22 July 2024 till December.

During this time, travel advisors will be on hand to help people locate temporary stops and answer questions to keep services running smoothly for the thousands of people who rely on the Hard Interchange.

The terminal building will remain open throughout the works so people can use the facilities and shops.

Overview of the temporary stops:

  • Stop P – Megabus, National Express and cruise shuttles will use the stops opposite the Premier Inn on Queen Street on the same side of the road as Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
  • Stop L – (closest to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard) First Bus services 1, 2, 3, 8, H1, PR1, X4, X5 to city centre and north of the city.
  • Stop M – (outside Co-op) services to Southsea and Old Portsmouth – First Bus service 3 and Stagecoach services 23, 25, 700.
  • Stop T – (layby outside the bus apron where the works are happening) Stagecoach services 20, 21, 23 to city centre and north of the city.
  • The taxi rank will be relocated by the Voi rental e-scooter and e-bike racks and will be signposted.

The Gosport Ferry, FastCat Passenger Ferry and Portsmouth Harbour Railway Station will operate their normal services. Voi rental e-scooter and e-bike racks also remain available for use.

Mildren Construction Limited will carry out the repairs to the concrete area used by the buses and coaches, to completely replace the road surface on the bus apron. The works will take five months and working hours will be from 7am – 7pm, in line with the noise restriction levels for Portsmouth.

Cllr Peter Candlish, the council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, said:

“The Hard is a thriving transport hub for the city and these works are essential to keep the area operating smoothly for many years to come.

“Keeping the temporary stops close by, with plenty of signage and staff on hand to assist people on their journeys will help to keep disruption to a minimum.

“We’re sorry to inconvenience local residents and businesses and we are very grateful for everyone’s patience and understanding during these temporary adjustments.”

To accommodate overflow from the taxi rank and a layover space for the buses and coaches, public parking on College Street and St George Square will be suspended.
