Portsmouth City Council’s Energy Services team has won the “Regional Vulnerable Customer Support Organisation of the Year”, in the South East Energy Efficiency Awards for the third year in a row.

Switched On Portsmouth is the council’s in-house energy saving team, and was nominated by Agility Eco Services Ltd, one of the council’s delivery partners for domestic energy efficiency schemes.

This award recognises one organisation that has shown a true commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable people through energy efficiency within its region.  Switched On Portsmouth is a part of the council that is dedicated to supporting vulnerable people with energy saving measures, through a variety of government funded schemes. In the last year, they have taken over 1,400 phone calls for free energy saving advice and have attended over 140 events in Portsmouth to speak with residents and refer them to schemes that will help reduce their energy bills and usage.

Through various schemes, the council leads a consortium of 23 local authorities and has secured funding to provide energy efficiency upgrades such as insulation, air source heat pumps and solar panels. Since the launch in 2019, energy efficiency upgrades and advice has been provided to over 7,000 people in Portsmouth and across those households over 1 million kWh of energy has been saved, equivalent to boiling a kettle non-stop for 22 years.

Cllr Kimberly Barrett, Cabinet member for Climate Change and Greening the City said:

“It’s wonderful to once again acknowledge the dedication of the energy team. They continue to be  committed to addressing fuel poverty, especially during a period when the rising cost of living is a significant issue for numerous households in the city. The council is actively investing in energy efficiency initiatives and incorporating energy-saving technology in newly constructed or renovated council properties. These efforts are essential in fulfilling our commitment to combat the climate crisis in all our accomplishments.”
