Oh come all ye recyclers

Over Christmas and New Year, Portsmouth City Council has announced there will be a variety of changes to your rubbish, recycling and food waste collections. Residents are advised to check online for details of their collections.

For rubbish and recycling to be collected it should be put out on the street by 6am, and bins taken in as soon as possible after collections. If residents miss their collection, they can take it to the Port Solent household waste recycling centre. It’s open seven days a week (booking is required), except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Here is a handy list of Christmas related waste that can go in the green recycling bin in Portsmouth:

  • Gift wrap (not containing glitter or shiny patterns)
  • Christmas cards (remove ribbons, bows, batteries, and sections with glitter)
  • Cardboard boxes from packaging (postal, toys, gifts, food, drinks)
  • Food/sweet/chocolate tins and drinks cans
  • Plastic bottles with lids on
  • Empty aerosols

There are some items which should not be placed in the green bin including gift wrap containing glitter or shiny patterns, bubble wrap and plastic bags.

Glass bottles, drink cartons, textiles and plastic pots, tubs and trays can be recycled at local recycling banks. Glass bottle banks are emptied more frequently over the festive season, but can get very full this time of year, so if possible try to store these items at home until demand reduces.

Plastic pots, tubs, and trays can be recycled at special plastic collection banks around the city, but not put in your green recycle bin. Residents who are unable to visit the communal banks should put these plastic items in with their general rubbish.

If you aren’t sure what can be recycled, you can easily find out on the council’s website.

Cllr Dave Ashmore, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services at Portsmouth City Council, said: “Over the festive period councils collect about 10% more waste than at other times of the year, so it’s important to recycle correctly. Please check on the website if you’re unsure. If you are driving your items to a recycling bank, you could consider taking your friends or neighbours as well, to cut down on car journeys.”

Full recycling banks can be reported by emailing recyclingandrubbish@portsmouthcc.gov.uk or calling 023 9284 1105.
