Businesses and organisations in Portsmouth are being encouraged to boost their sustainable travel by applying for grants of up to £4,000 aimed at enhancing workplace travel options.

The funding, part of the Portsmouth City Council’s workplace sustainable travel fund (WSTF), is designed to spark improvements for business journeys and enable easy walking and cycling for employees. These enhancements could include a range of initiatives, including cycle parking, repair stations, lockers, high-visibility accessories, pool bikes, and bike trailers. These changes will help reduce air pollution throughout Portsmouth and make the air we breathe cleaner, having a positive effect on climate change.

The advantages of sustainable travel benefit both businesses and their staff. Employers can anticipate reduced operational costs and enhanced environmental reputation, while employees can save time and money when commuting, and experience improved physical and mental health.

Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Cabinet Member for Transport, expressed his hopes by saying, “I encourage businesses to grab the opportunity for funding to reduce their environmental footprint and play a part in creating a cleaner city. We know that air pollution has a significant impact on people’s health in Portsmouth and we want to encourage greener and healthier travel alternatives. The facilities provided by the funding will help improve air quality across the city.”
