Portsmouth’s travel network needs to change to meet the demands of today and the future, an ambitious strategy and active travel plan is set to create a greener, safer and healthier future for journeys in the city.
Portsmouth City Council is inviting everyone to share their views on the transport strategy and plans for active travel in consultations that start at mid-day on 28 September 2020. The Transport Strategy is fundamental to the growth of Portsmouth by improving connectivity, alongside promoting cleaner air and reducing carbon emissions and the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan will help provide an active travel network that more people choose to use.
Investing in the creation of an inclusive travel system and delivering connectivity across our communities, by prioritising walking, cycling and public transport over general traffic will enable us to create a safer, healthier and more prosperous city.
The pandemic has led to a shift in peoples’ travel behaviour with a rise in cycling and walking. To support this continued shift, developments to the network are essential. The active travel plan known as the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan provides more detail on improvements to routes that are planned over the next ten years.
Cllr Lynne Stagg, Cabinet Member for Traffic and Transportation, said “We must ensure our travel network works for everyone, including residents, people who work in the city and visitors, through creating an inclusive, active and sustainable network which will allow for a safer, healthier and thriving city. I would like to encourage everyone to take a moment to share your views on the overarching strategy for travel and the plan for cycling and walking in Portsmouth”.
