Restaurants, cafes, bars & pop-up venues across the city are taking part in a trial of a new ‘Contactless Menu’ app which was developed locally to help hospitality businesses with contactless ordering and payment.
Contactless Menu is a new app which has been developed by local software developers. It enables customers to use a traffic light system to quickly see which venues have spaces or are busy, book a table, order from the menu and pay all through their mobile phone.
The pilot is being supported by Shaping Portsmouth, as part of the new Portsmouth City Council ‘Go local’ project they are leading on to help high street businesses to operate safely and profitably and to help residents return confidently.
Claire Upstall, Manager for Marmion Foods, Catalan Barcelona, The Sunday Post, Pitigliano, said: “We’re really excited by having Contactless Menu, the traffic light system will help customers to check our availability too. It’s a great initiative for Portsmouth businesses and residents.”
David & Barrie from Chit Chats at Fratton Community Centre, said: “It’s a really good idea, we’ve found it easy to use and so have our customers.”
Up to 40 venues can participate in the pilot scheme which is free of charge. Venues are fully supported and provided with the handheld terminal needed. Those wanting to continue with the scheme after the pilot will get to keep the handheld terminal and simply pay a small commission on orders.

Cllr Steve Pitt, the council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Economic Development, said: “As part of our commitment to support the local economy, we asked Shaping Portsmouth to work closely with businesses in some of our key areas to look at how they could do things differently and together for mutual benefit.
“Part of this involves looking at digital solutions – particularly to help our more vulnerable residents to continue to use their favourite local venues and shops. We hope this pilot scheme supports our businesses to operate more smoothly within the current guidelines and also helps customers to feel more confident about eating out safely.”

There is no cost to you but many benefits – including your venue appearing on the app when people are searching for somewhere local to eat or drink.”
