Portsmouth's Transition Fund
Last updated: 16 June 2011 11:50At its meeting on 8th February Portsmouth City Council set aside a one off transition fund of £100,000 to help support organisations who were currently in receipt of council funding and facing a reduction in funding. This fund recognised organisations contributing positively to outcomes on the ground in Portsmouth and maximized their opportunities to seek other sources of funding, or make other changes to make them sustainable.
The focus of the fund was to provide a chance for organisations to review the ways they were working and prepare to engage in a different funding environment.
23 organizations and voluntary groups applied to the Transition Fund and 14 groups were awarded grant funding of between £15,000 and £2,500.
Awards include £15,000 funding to Learning Links that will be used as bridging finance before a new contract and funding stream for the voluntary organisation begins later this year.
Support to vulnerable young people will continue to be developed through the recruitment, training and on-going support of adult volunteers with a £12,000 grant to Motiv8, a charity that works to help young people.
Relate has been awarded £10,000 that will be used to pilot the use of remote counselling to allow them to work efficiently and reduce counselling time. Children with Down syndrome at city schools will also continue to receive specialist support services with £10,000 awarded to Down Syndrome International.
Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Leader of Portsmouth City Council, said: “This is a tough time for many voluntary and community groups who along with groups throughout the county, are facing reduction in their funding.
“This fund is about giving as much support possible to groups that protect and support some our city’s most vulnerable people.
“These grants should go some way to ease the pressure and provide those groups with extra funding and time they need to develop and meet the challenges of the future.”
