Voter registration - frequently asked questions
Last updated: 23 March 2009 12:19What if I move house?
The Register of Electors is not automatically updated when you notify the Council Tax section.
To amend your details on the electoral register you should complete an elector registration form for your new address.

If I pay council tax, am I registered to vote automatically?
No, the electoral register is not updated automatically if you pay council tax. This is because the criteria are different. For example, the council tax may be paid by a landlord rather than the residents of the property.
When you change address you need to notify the Electoral Registration Officer in order to change your details on the electoral register.
What happens if I change my name or get married?
If you change your name, for example through marriage, you should inform the Electoral Registration Officer in writing so that your name can be amended on the electoral register.
When doing so please remember to include details of your address and the name you were previously known by. It you have recently got married, a photocopy of your marriage certificate would be sufficient.
Why can't I get credit?
Registered credit reference agencies are entitled to the electoral register and may use this data as one of the ways to verify where someone lives when they apply for credit.
However, there are a number of other reasons why you can't get credit that are not to do with registering to vote. For further guidance you should contact the relevant credit reference agency.
Why should I register?
It is a legal requirement to return the annual registration form that is sent to each house in the city in August/September every year.
If you are not registered, you will not be able to vote.
The electoral register is also used by Credit reference agencies. If you are not on the electoral register, you may have problems obtaining credit. This may include getting a loan or mortgage, a mobile phone or opening a bank account.
If I move abroad, can I still vote?
If you move abroad and you are a British citizen you are entitled to register as an 'Overseas elector'.
For more information please see 'How to register as an overseas elector'
What is the edited register?
The edited register is a version of the electoral register that is available for general sale. It is often used for marketing purposes.
If you do not wish to appear on the edited register you may 'opt-out'. To do this tick the box marked 'Opt Out' on the registration form.
For more information please see 'The Full and Edited Versions of the Register'
If you have any questions concerning the above issues please contact the Election Services Office.
