Raps the way to do it

Connexions logo Young people aged 16–19 are being encouraged in an innovative way to visit the Connexions Centre in Portsmouth on Friday 31 October.

17-year-old Liam Nicholas is helping to raise awareness of Connexions’ services by rapping to half-term shoppers in Commercial Road.

Liam, who is classed as NEET (not in education, employment or training) will tell young people who have nothing to do, no job to go to or no course to attend, to head down to Connexions for some free advice on what they can do to fulfil their potential.

During the rap act young volunteers, who are currently in training, will hand out flyers about the Connexions Centre to young people.

Connexions offer a free service to all young people aged between 13 and 19 (or up to 25 for young people who have learning difficulties and disabilities).  They provide information and advice on how to make a positive contribution through work, training, education or volunteering and how to stay healthy and safe.

Liam is supported by Rantstudio1 a free recording studio for 12 to 19 yrs run by the youth service at the Buckland Youth Activities Centre and hopes one day to become a professional artist.

Portsmouth City Council, in the pilot activity organised by Connexions, are testing out ways of promoting events which young people said they responded to in a recent consultation by the YMCA Fairthorne Group on behalf of the council.
