Kids get the bright message at disco

image from poster Young people are being urged to go for a bright look this season – to keep them safer on the streets.

Road safety campaigners from Portsmouth City Council are getting the “Be safe, be seen’ message across with posters, roadshows and even a Halloween-themed disco.

“Traffic is the biggest killer of 11-16-year olds. And with the clocks going back this weekend it’s even more important that youngsters can be seen easily by drivers,” said council road safety co-ordinator Nicola Waight.

“We’re hoping this campaign, which uses images and themes young people can relate to, hits the spot.”

The campaign uses images of brightly-coloured clubbing gear to get its message across.

Road safety officers will be at the Snap disco at The Union, Cambridge Road, Portsmouth, on Tuesday 28 October, from 7pm, with competitions, free hi-visibility fashion accessories and face-painting. Hi-vis leg-warmers will be among the prizes, and the theme will be “Be seen this Halloween”.

Tickets for the disco are £6 from Asda Fratton, City of Portsmouth Girls' School, Fratton police station and Miltoncross School.

The team will also be out with a Halloween-themed roadshow next week, inviting youngters to make hi-vis badges and pick up safety tips. They will have hi-vis and road safety products for sale at cost price, along with free hi-vis stickers and accessories, and a chance to make a hi-vis badge.

Posters are being sent to schools, promoting free reflective and hi-vis gear such as arm bands, tags for bags, shoelaces and stickers. The accessories will be distributed to schoolchildren after half-term, in line with a council target to make sure all schoolchildren have them.

The roadshow will be from 10am to 3.30pm as follows:

  • Monday - The Hard
  • Tuesday - Commercial Road
  • Wednesday - Cosham High Street
  • Thursday - Palmerston Road

Anyone interested in hi-vis products or other road-safety gear, including cycling equipment, can call the team on (023) 9268 8262 or email road.safety@portsmouthcc.gov.uk
