Getting green to win the gold

A flower Floral displays from categories ranging from best balcony to best courtyard were judged this summer during the annual Portsmouth in Bloom competition and gardeners are already being encouraged to prepare for next year.

Each summer homes, gardens, parks, schools, police and fire stations, shops and streets, offices and workplaces around Portsmouth come to life with plants and flowers of all kinds and there is both friendly rivalry and comradeship as participants enter their hard work in the competition.  This year there was over 250 entries in the 36 categories – which range from best front garden through to best display at industrial premises.

Trophies were awarded for first, second and third place in each category, with judging beginning as early as June! The judges were looking at design and layout, use of colour, foliage and form, quality and health of plants, weed control and care for the environment.

Cllr Terry Hall, executive member for culture said, “This is a great local competition which challenges residents and businesses to make their gardens and outside spaces cleaner and greener. The beautiful gardens created benefit those simply passing by as well as the entrants!”

Judges take account of many aspects of each entry including the choice, colours and containers of plants, the quality, and any special features as well as ‘green’ issues such as sustainability and litter.
