Ever wondered where you come from, or are simply curious about Portsmouth’s heritage? Turn the pages of history at Portsmouth City Records Office at the annual Open Day on Saturday 18th October. An exciting programme of free events is planned from 10am to 3pm, including workshops and guided tours of the archives in storage. A selection of documents will also be on display in the Searchroom to show the wide range of sources available for you to use in your research with staff on hand to answer your questions and offer advice on using the records.

10.15 - 11am
Introduction to Reading Old Documents Michael Gunton
Learn how to decipher old handwriting in this practical workshop and put your new skills to the test.
11.15 – 12.pm and 1.15 – 2pm
‘Conan Doyle and Portsmouth’ Sarah Speller
Find out more about the extraordinary Arthur Conan Doyle collection recently acquired by the city.
2.15pm – 3pm
Portsmouth City Records Office holds archives of the Portsmouth area and the people who have lived here from as long ago as 1313AD to the present day, including baptism, marriage and burial registers for the Anglican Diocese, electoral registers, rate books, photographs and maps.
‘This will be a great opportunity to discover just how much your local Record Office has to offer.’ says Archives and Development Manager Michael Gunton. ‘Whether you are researching your family tree, interested in local history or just curious about what we do, everyone is welcome!’
There is no need to book to attend the Open Day and guided tours. However, places on the workshops are limited so booking for these is essential. To attend a workshop or to find out more information email Searchroom@portsmouthcc.gov.uk or telephone 023 92827261 and ask for the Searchroom.
