Help is on hand for young people in Portsmouth who want to give up smoking.
Portsmouth City Teaching PCT and the city council are working together to provide a Young Persons’ Smoking Cessation and Prevention Service that works with younger smokers across the city.
Through the service, health professionals work with schools, taking the messages about smoking and how to stop directly to the young people themselves. Health professionals are able to get involved in classes, help to plan lessons and can lend schools resources aimed at helping to prevent smoking.
The Young Persons Smoking Cessation and Prevention Service also offers one-to-one support for young smokers, can help young people to work together in groups and support each other as they try to give-up.
Andy Ames, Health Development Worker at Portsmouth City Council, said: “As well as working hard to educate young people about the dangers so they don’t start smoking in the first place, the city council and the primary care trust are also committed to helping those young people who do smoke to give up.
“The numbers of young people smoking has been dropping for lots of reasons, including peer pressure, their health concerns or worries about their looks. However, once young people start smoking, it is important that we give them the support they need to help them to stop. That’s why one-to-one sessions and group workshops especially designed for young smokers are now available.
