Council gets tough on trollies

dumped shopping trolley (freefoto.com) Supermarkets will have to pay up for abandoned shopping trollies under a new Portsmouth City Council crackdown.

Dumped trollies are a big problem on the council’s housing estates, with almost 5,000 abandoned last year.

Up to now trollies have been collected by council contractors and returned to supermarkets.

But from this month, trollies will be seized by the council. Supermarkets will have to pay a fee of £9.47 per trolley to get them back. If they don’t pay within six weeks, the trollies will be disposed of.

The council will get tougher after January 31. Supermarkets will get a bill to cover the cost of dealing with the trollies, whether they are reclaimed or not.

The new way of dealing with trollies was agreed yesterday by Cllr Jason Fazackarley, cabinet member for environment and community safety.

He said: "We have spoken to supermarkets and understand that they take the situation seriously and have improved the security of trollies. But the fact is that thousands of them are still being dumped on our housing land – about 3,000 so far this year.

"We are also asking residents who dump trollies to stop. Abandoned trollies spoil the environment for their neighbours, cause obstructions – especially for disabled and elderly people – and can cause damage."

To report an abandoned trolley, residents can call the city helpdesk on (023) 9283 4092 or click on 'report it' on the council website, www.portsmouth.gov.uk
