Residents asked for home-truths about Portsmouth

image of survey Around 4,000 Portsmouth residents are to be asked what they really think about their local area.

Hundreds of cities and towns are taking part in a national government-led questionnaire called the ‘Place Survey’.

Fieldwork for the survey starts this week, and those randomly selected to participate will be asked to give their opinions on local services such as the police, health, and the council.

Questionnaires have been mailed out to local households by leading market researchers IPSOS-MORI.

The survey is being led by Portsmouth City Council and Portsmouth’s Local Strategic Partnership. IPSOS-MORI will run the survey and collate all the results, with results expected in February 2009.

Portsmouth's Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) is an umbrella partnership bringing together representatives from the public, private, voluntary and community sectors.

Chair of the Local Strategic Partnership Dr Paul Edmondson-Jones said:
”There are many organisations that provide services for local people. This survey allows us to gauge opinion on a variety of issues affecting life in the city, rather than focusing on one organisation in particular.

“We hope that people will respond to the survey as this will help us plan for making improvements in the future.”

The survey has over 30 questions and residents will be asked amongst other things to rank what makes somewhere a good place to live and what needs improving in their local area. They’ll be asked questions in relation to a number of issues such as activities for teenagers, access to nature, health services or reducing crime.

The findings will be made available early next year, and will help the council and its partners plan better services and find out exactly what residents think about their local area.

Portsmouth City Council’s Chief Executive David Williams said: ”This is an opportunity for residents to have their say about what’s happening on their doorstep.

“As a council we want to make sure we’re providing the best service we can, and residents are the most important people to tell us how to improve. We look forward to hearing the diverse range of responses to the survey.

“The fact that this survey is happening nationally will enable us to see how we compare to other councils.”

Deadline for responses to the survey is 19 December.
