Getting the message about young people’s mental health

Being You poster A new campaign that aims to raise awareness about the issue of young people’s mental health has been hitting the streets of Portsmouth this week with a series of eye-catching new posters.

The posters mark the start of the Being You campaign, put together by Portsmouth City Council and Portsmouth City Teaching Primary Care Trust. As well as posters featuring cartoon characters designed to raise awareness of mental health issues, there is also a toolkit that will be used by schools to help young people learn about and discuss everything from anxiety and depression to eating disorders and self-harm.

Jonathan Smith from Portsmouth City Council’s Health Improvement Service said:  “It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from mental health affects us all. Help and support is out there so don’t be afraid to talk.”

The campaign aims to relay messages to young people about accessing local support, directing them through the ‘are you sorted’ website. The hope is that this campaign will also help young people talk about mental health issues more openly.

The Being You campaign is part of a wider focus on adolescent health. For more information about health issues affecting young people in Portsmouth, visit www.areyousorted.co.uk
