Opportunities with Portsmouth City Council

Have you thought about volunteering?

Volunteering opportunities encompass a huge variety of options.  From helping an elderly neighbour with their shopping, to providing legal advice for a local charity, volunteers make a vital contribution to all aspects of community life.  Volunteering can improve your life in countless ways - helping you make new friends, boosting your confidence and improving your CV - not to mention making a real difference to your community.

The vast array of opportunities for volunteering within Portsmouth City Council has now been brought together online.  "Volunteer", the booklet of volunteering opportunities at Portsmouth City Council which we produced last year proved very popular, and we've now put together all these opportunities - and some new ones - online.

Our on-line directory provides links to over 50 different opportunities with Portsmouth City Council services who use volunteers, and there's something for all interests.

The directory is co-ordinated by the city council's Democratic & Community Engagement team and aims to:

  • raise the profile of volunteering in Portsmouth to help achieve a Local Public Service Agreement (LPSA) target on volunteering
  • highlight the wonderful work of volunteers already happening within the city council
  • encourage more local people to get involved in voluntary work

We've grouped the opportunities into five different categories, so if you go to the category that interests you most, you'll then see all the different options open to you.

The five categories are:

  • Arts, museums and libraries
  • Children and young people
  • Working with people and communities
  • Environment and wildlife
  • Fundraising, events and tourism

To find out more about all these opportunities, just click onto one of the category links below.

And examples of opportunities from each of these categories include:

  • Helping with the Arthur Conan Doyle Collection
  • Child Pedestrian Training
  • Volunteer Drivers
  • Volunteer Groups Litter Picks
  • Visitor Information Centres

One of our volunteers in Portsmouth summed up what  what volunteering means to them, saying: “When I retired I thought that was it, but voluntary work has opened up a whole new life and friends”
