Purge on street clutter to create more parking

parking space Drivers will get more parking spaces after a push by Portsmouth City Council to get rid of unnecessary street clutter and restrictions.

The council is scouring the streets for unwanted concrete build-outs and planters, unnecessary parking bans and unloved roadside verges.

If residents agree, these can be removed to free up parking space.

The plan has been approved by Cllr Lynne Stagg, the council’s cabinet member for traffic and transportation, and will be partly funded by income from council car parks.

Head of transport and street management Charles Stunell said: “Exactly where we’ll remove unwanted street features and parking restrictions will depend on consultation with local residents. Some planters, for example, are much-loved and carefully tended, but others are empty and no longer wanted.

“Some roadside verges have been destroyed by people parking on them, and would be better paved.

“In a congested city like Portsmouth we need to make space for parking wherever we can.”

Other improvements in the same package include lighting for unlit alleyways, and safety fencing to stop young people jumping into the sea at the boat channel under the M275 near Ranelagh Road, Stamshaw.
