Fair play - have your say

Play equipment Calling all families, children and residents - tell us where you'd like to have new children's play spaces.

Portsmouth City Council is asking families, children and young people where they'd like to see better play opportunities, as part of a £2 million project to develop adventure playgrounds and play parks in Portsmouth.

The cut off date for suggestions is Friday 3 October and ideas for the location of the adventure playground would be welcomed in particular as very few suggestions have been made to date.

Pathfinder status will bring £2m of government funding to promote play in the city. One new large open-access adventure playground or play-park and a further 28 play areas in parks and open spaces in the city will be developed or improved.

These free-to-use play areas will be aimed at 8 to 13 year-olds including children with disabilities. Young people will be involved in the design of the areas.

Cllr Eleanor Scott, Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Young People, said: "This is a great opportunity for children and young people to give us their ideas about where play spaces should be, for creating new areas for them to play in, and for improving existing facilities.

"We want to hear ideas and suggestions from children, groups and others for this exciting project, which promises to energise play in Portsmouth.

"Pathfinder status will allow us to provide innovative, imaginative and enchanting play spaces in the city, expanding the range of possibilities and play experiences available to young people.  This is a great way to get local people involved and to have a say about play."

So if there's a site in your neighbourhood you think could be turned into play space, or if you have an idea or suggestion for improving play facilities contact Chris Richards at the council on 9283 4810 or email play.pathfinder@portsmouthcc.gov.uk

There are currently five staffed adventure playgrounds, summer open-access schemes and 100 play areas in parks and open spaces across Portsmouth.
