Residents can remain at Windsor House following fire

Guildhall Portsmouth City Council has given all residents at Windsor House in Landport the all clear to remain in the property following a fire that happened late last night.  The fire is being treated by the emergency services as an arson attack and an investigation is in place.

The privately owned property consists of 30 flats which are privately let to a number of tenants.  The council has checked essential amenities including water, heating and lighting as well as fire safety measures and is satisfied that it is suitable for residents.  Temporary accommodation was offered to residents of the basement flat until the damage is repaired but they have decided to stay in the property.

Cllr Steven Wylie, Portsmouth City Council’s Executive Member for Housing, said: “This is a regrettable situation and my thoughts go to those who were involved.

“I'd like to praise all the emergency services, especially the fire service, for their work.  We will be working closely with them to help them with their investigations.”

Bruce Lomax, Portsmouth City Council’s Housing Standards Manager, said: “We have assessed the property and have checked all of the essential amenities.  We are pleased that the landlord has taken positive steps to address the situation.

“We are satisfied the health, safety and welfare of residents is not compromised and residents are able to remain in the building.”

If residents have any concerns, they should contact the council’s Housing Standards team on 023 9268 8369 or email housing.privatesector@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.
