Sports tour launched in Portsmouth to mark National Parks Week

Tennis balls Portsmouth's Community Wardens have organised a summer-long programme of free sports sessions in the city's parks for 10-16-year-olds.

The start of the 'Sports Tour' coincides with National Parks Week (July 27 - Aug 2) when it kicks off at Buckland Park on Tuesday, July 29.

Children are invited to join the Community Wardens in parks across Portsmouth for fun and games, weather permitting, between 3pm and 5pm when they will be able to play volleyball, badminton, football and more.

Cathy Bennett, Portsmouth City Council's Operations Manager for the Community Warden Service said: "We have organised a summer of fun, sporting activities for 10-16-year-olds, as a diversionary scheme to occupy children during their school holidays; as well as to encourage them to stay fit and healthy."

The Sports Tour dates are as follows:

  • July 29 Buckland Park
  • August 1 Stamshaw Park
  • August 5 Baffins Pond
  • August 8 Kingston Rec
  • August 12 Central Street
  • August 15 Cobden Park
  • August 19 College Park
  • August 22 Buckingham Green
  • August 26 Buckland Park
  • August 29 Kingston Rec

Charlie Adie, Safer Portsmouth Partnership's Champion for Young People, said: "This is an ideal opportunity for young people to get involved in sporting activities over the school-holidays in a safe environment and is a great example of how the agencies from the Safer Portsmouth Partnership work together to keep the community safe.

"I would urge the young people of Portsmouth to take advantage of this opportunity and have fun."
