Warburtons announces the UK’s top picnic spot

Picnic basket After months of searching and thousands of votes being cast by picnic lovers across the country, Portsmouth’s Southsea Common has been awarded fourth place in the search for the UK’s favourite picnic spot in the Warburtons Picnic Awards 2008.

The top spot was awarded to Sewerby Hall and Gardens in Yorkshire after receiving over 800 votes.  In second place was Loch an Eilein Rothiemurchus Estate in Scotland and third place went to Jumbles Reservoir in the North West.

The nationwide competition – launched in May by the family baker to celebrate Warburtons National Bread Week – attracted votes from all over the country. After being crowned the South East’s favourite picnic spot, Southsea Common battled it out with nine other regional winners from across the UK, including Richmond Park in London and Ham Hill Country Park in the South West.

Terry Hall, local Councillor for the Southsea region, comments: “To be named one of the top ten favourite picnic spots in the UK is a fantastic feat for Southsea Common.  We’re delighted with how everyone in Portsmouth supported us and I’d like to thank each person who voted.  We hope families continue to enjoy picnics here throughout the summer months and next year we’ll be aiming for the top spot.”

Jonathon Warburton, Chairman of the fifth generation family baker, comments: “Congratulations to Southsea Common and to all of our regional finalists. The awards have profiled some of the UK’s finest picnic spots and all the sites nominated are playing a major role in helping us celebrate picnicking and its popular role in family life.”
