From Thursday (July 24), Portsmouth Registrar Office will be able to help people apply for British nationality.
The Nationality Checking Service, which has been set up in partnership with the Home Office, is designed to speed up the process of applying for British citizenship.
A team has been trained with the Office of the Immigration Service Commissioner to ensure forms have been completed correctly and that supporting documents are checked and certified. This will enable the Home Office to deal with applications more quickly and means applicants can retain their passports and other important documents.
Emma Clarke, Registration Support Officer, said: "This service is going to be available to residents of Portsmouth applying for British citizenship, as well as to people from outside the city, and is intended to make the application process simpler and quicker."
The cost of the service is £50 for a single application or £100 for a family of up to two adults and two children (and £15 for each additional child).
The service will be available on Wednesdays and Thursdays, by appointment only; to make an appointment with the Nationality Checking Service team, telephone 023 9281 6098.
